Farm Happenings for October 26, 2021

Posted on October 22nd, 2021 by John Zilnicki

Harvest moon is upon us and the push continues to harvest all our potatoes.  The first half of potato harvest went smooth, and the 2nd half has been a struggle with many break downs and hiccups.  I guess the equipment is as tired as we are.  It is a labor of love that is for sure, but their is some sad truth to it.  I honestly don't see many farmers continuing this way of life here on Long Island.  Long Island once grew 30,000 acres of potatoes! Now Long Island has less then 800 acres!  Its a sad pill to swallow, but the writing is on the wall. Make sure your following us on instagram and facebook to see updates from the fields @zilnickifarms.

For some exciting news, we will be partnering with a New Jersey farm who raises pastured turkeys for Thanksgiving.  Yes, its off Long Island, but the options for turkeys are extremely limited here and I still want to give you the chance to a real pastured turkey.  I will be sending more information about this this week.

Enjoy this beautiful weekend as some rainy weather moves in for this coming week!

Your farmer,

John
