Farm Happenings for September 4, 2019

Posted on September 1st, 2019 by Ben Saunders

It's really starting to feel like Fall as the nights are getting longer, the leaves are starting to change color and I saw my first small Pod (flock) of Brown Pelicans at Saylorville Lake today!  But it still feels like the beginning of Summer based on what we are harvesting now, so I feel all confused : )!  Cherry tomatoes are in an abundance and the Full Size tomatoes are starting to ripen up as are the Sweet Peppers!  Both the Full Size Tomatoes and Sweet Peppers are only available in limited quantities now, but after walking the fields today it looks to be an amazing and abundant crop of both!

We're also really excited to be including the Hakurei Sweet Turnips as an option for the Shares this week!  You many remember their sweet flavor from the Spring and the Fall plantings are tasting even sweeter!  A bit of surprise this season to me is how beautiful the greens are this Fall!  Normally our Fall plantings of turnips have flea beetles and the greens get pretty eaten up (not effecting the roots though) but this season the flea beetles (a pest insect) have really not been an issue!  So while I'm sure you'll enjoy the sweetness of the turnips themselves, don't forget to also enjoy the greens!

We're starting the annual event of Farm Crew members leaving the Farm to go back to College and/or starting the next Chapter of their life!  Last week was Tate's last day and he will definitely be missed!  It's exciting as he is joining his partner up in Milwaukee, WI (who is getting her Master's in Dietetics) and he will be working on a Farm up there, with the hope of eventually starting his own Farm in NW Iowa.  Ames and Ankeney Members, I just sent out an email to you all about needing to switch delivery days to Thursdays, as Tate delivered those Shares, so please respond to THAT email that you got it.

Until next week,
