Farm Happenings for September 2, 2020

Posted on August 31st, 2020 by Ben Saunders

Hard to believe that this morning (8/31) we all were wearing hooded sweatshirts considering the temperatures all last week!  This has definitely been the craziest season I've ever experienced weather-wise. Your crops were getting a little stressed out from the heat (meaning not maturing, dropping blossoms, etc) and these cooler temperatures now should help perk them back up.

Iowa is in a pretty serious drought right now and hopefully farmer friends in other parts of the State got some of the rains as they have totally missed us every time at the Farm.  Fortunately we've got a really deep well and been able to keep things fairly well watered.  We are going to be spending a lot of time this week reseeding all of the direct seeded crops that we lost in the Derecho and will have to overhead water them since we are so dry.

This has been a really hard season for your Farmers and I'm sure it has been a hard year for all of you as well!  There are some positives though!!!  The Cherry tomatoes seem to be starting to hit peak production!  It appears like the Full Size tomatoes are finally just starting to ripen up and the plants are loaded with green fruit!  This week also begins the first "official" distribution of Watermelons!

Have a great week,

Farmer Ben and the Crew
