Frost = green tomato season

Posted on November 30th, 2021 by Chelsey Simpson

Most (if not all?) of the state had a good, hard freeze last week, which usually spells the end of certain crops like tomatoes. It's amazing we had tomatoes clear to the end of November in the first place, but now they are done for a while.

But frost usually gives rise to a very short harvest season on a southern delicacy: green tomatoes. Of course, green tomatoes occur year-round, but it is seldom in the farmer's interest to pick a green tomato if she leave it on the vine and charge more for a fully ripened, red tomato.

But frost up-ends that logic. It is do-or-die for tomatoes once the frost arrives. Although "fry-or-die" is a better way to put it.
