Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer Season, Week 13, Delivery August 23rd thru August 25th
---- Last Mulching ----
This last week and this week we finally will be finishing the last of the season mulching. The last plants getting mulched are our cantaloupes and watermelons. We have 4 plantings of each that are planted in succession so that we get a constant flow of melons throughout the season. This last planting is always a gamble because we don't know when first frost will come in. But even though it's a gamble we still have to at least have some hope they'll produce, so mulching continues for one last time.
---- Plenty of Rain ----
So this year is the inverse of last year. We are getting plenty of rain, 1.25" in fact this last weekend. It's making it more difficult to get out to the field, but it's spaced out enough so that no standing water is occurring. Hopefully by September the rain eases off a bit because otherwise fall harvest will be quite sloppy since the soil never really dries out.
