Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer, Week 16, September 14 thru September 16

---- Cabbage ----

Harvested a lot of cabbage over the weekend. It will keep for quite sometime in your fridge, trust me. I've had the same head of cabbage in my fridge for the last month and have just been shaving off bits whenever I need some and its quite a handy veggie to have on hand.

---- Tomatoes ----

Tomatoes are showing signs of being done, at least the first planting. The slicers are just about done with very few green tomatoes on the vine that will ripen up. Roma's are ripening all at once and are making one final push before the first frost. Cherry's are also all ripening all at once but there fruits hold somewhat decent on the vine so they should be fine till frost. We do have a second planting but it's hard to say if it will produce anything before first frost.

---- Carrots ----

Carrots are finally big enough to start harvesting. It will start slow but hopefully well have plenty of carrots for you folks. The carrots are anywhere from 3 to 6 inches and slender. We have a hard time growing carrots in our soil because well carrots don't like our soil type. We have clay, and a lot of it, which makes it hard for the carrots to penetrate deep into the soil. Carrots like sandy soil where the soil doesn't compact and allows the carrot to get long and thick easily. But even though our carrots are small they are just as tasty as any others.

Thanks,
Ian.
