Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer, Week 13, August 24 thru August 26

---- Sweet Corn ----

Now that this is the second week of sweet corn I wanted to take this moment to just tell you folks about corn. This years corn is small, with the lack of water the ears did not grow very big and even with over head watering we couldn't do too much. That being said it is still very tasty and sweet, normally we pick it 1 to 2 days before it shows up at your door so quite fresh.

---- Sugar Cube Cantaloupes ----

The main season cantaloupes are just starting to come in. These cantaloupes differ from the melons from about 3 weeks back in a couple of ways. One, they are a bit smaller, but they don't have as large of a seed pocket so a lot of flesh in there. Secondly, they are just sweeter, in my opinion. The early melons were an experiment and although it was nice to have them early I find that Sugar Cube, our main season cantaloupe, is just so much better.

---- Long Term Storage Crops ----

We are going to try something new this week, and if you were with us in the winter this won't be too foreign. We are going to take long term storage crops (store for a while in open air or in our cooler) out of automatic distribution and just have them in the swap area. This means things like; potatoes, onions, garlic, winter squash, cabbage, turnips, kohlrabi, beets, carrots, and sunchokes, might not show up automatically in your box each week. I say might because it's not always the case. We're doing this because it allows for us to extend the season for these crops into the winter and allows for us to make sure that short term storage items are able to get moved out while they're still fresh. So remember to customize your box. And remember the goal is to have non perishables always in stock in the swap area so that if you want them you can get them, no problem.

Thanks,
Ian.
