Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Winter, Week 33&34, Jan 10

---- Last of Beets and White Turnips ----

We are down to the last beets and white turnips. They will go out into the boxes, or in the swap area. Winter is getting pretty slim on produce, although eggs, honey and bread a still fine. Feel free to empty your box and skip the delivery if nothing strikes your fancy. You will get credit for the empty box.

---- Plenty of Eggs ----

A new set of hens are now laying well. So we have plenty of eggs. We will increase the amount put in boxes to reflect the inventory. If you need less eggs, feel free to remove some from your box.

---- Hydroponic Setup ----

Six years ago we bought a hydroponic setup and grew lettuce and spinach during the winter. It worked well. However, it had some downsides. It was inside with artifical light, so used lots of electricity, and it had flowing water, so generated lots of humidity. So after 2 years, we quit using it. Now we have a greenhouse area we built last year, so we are ready to try it again. We've set aside an area that we can keep from freezing. And with sunlight, should need less electric. We plan to start it up in February after the coldest part of winter has passed.

Phil.
