Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer, Week 19, Oct 4

---- First Frost ----

We had our first frost - 3 days in a row, in fact. We did cover beans, summer squash, peppers and tomatoes. So we will still have some summer produce this week and next week - so all the way to the end of the Summer Season. We usually plan on first frost on Sept 20, we we got an extra 2 weeks of summer this year!

---- Winter Squash ----

Its always hard to "see" inside a winter squash, so you may get a squash that is not up to par. Let us know. We will include an extra squash next time. Sometimes we miss a bad spot forming, or a insect hole that leads to rot, or just a squash that did not ripen right. For any reason - just let us know. Thanks!

---- Purple Top Turnips ----

We started picking Purple Top Turnips. These are the traditional turnip - not as moist as the summer White Turnips we had. They keep forever, so they'll be available all fall and winter. Anything you can do with a potato, you can do with a turnip. My favored easy prep is to peel off the outer layer, then cut into cubes, mix half and half with cubed potato and fry with onions. Fried potatoes with hint of mustard and half the calories!

Phil.
