Farm Happenings for Week of October 3rd

Posted on September 29th, 2022 by Lorraine Blackwell

The sun is shining after a few dreary fall days and there is lots of vegetable bounty to be enjoyed in your fall / Thanksgiving meals! Before I tell you more about the veggies, I wanted to provide an important farm update. As some of you will know from chatting with me, I have decided to make 2022 the last season for the market garden / CSA. For the last 10 years I have loved growing vegetables for you, chatting with each of you at pickups, and watching your families grow! Some share members have been supporting us since day one and the vast majority of you have been supporting our farm for more than five years. While I have loved so much about growing food and running my own business, I am also looking forward to expanding my work experience and trying new things (I'm not one of those people that decides their career and sticks with it for 40+ years :)).

Part of the reason I bring this up now is so that anyone that has credits remaining on their account has the opportunity to use them up before the end of the season. While there will be a few more deliveries in 2022, this delivery will be one of the biggest with the most produce and extra options available. If anyone feels they will not be able to use up their credits before the end of the season please let me know and I will refund any remaining credits after the last delivery of the year.

The other reason I bring this up now is to say a giant "thank-you"! I know that buying produce directly from a farmer isn't always the easiest or cheapest choice and I appreciate your dedication to supporting local and your enthusiasm over the produce. There are aspects to farming that are thankless, but I can always depend on our share members to show the same enthusiasm for the vegetables that I feel. I hope you continue to support local farms going forward - there are always new ones starting that need support! And I'm not planning on disappearing from farming altogether: we will still be growing much food for ourselves and producing honey and meat. I plan to keep each of you on our farm email list and if we have any surplus in future years, I will send an email and take informal orders. I've grown accustomed to growing for 65+ families at a time so I am sure that when I switch to growing for just us I will grow far too much.

Now for some veggie details for the week: we have all our winter storage crops available, LOTS of delicious fall greens, and even some special treats from Pfennings Organics to fill in the gaps. The arugula and spinach in particular are especially delicious now that we have had some cold weather to sweeten them up.
