Fall Share Week One

Posted on September 24th, 2021 by Lorraine Blackwell

Welcome to the first week of the fall shares! So far, 2021 has been a great growing season and the fall crops are looking beautiful. The green cabbage available this week are particularly BIG and beautiful with most of them between 8 - 10lbs! If you love the make sauerkraut or cabbage rolls, these are the cabbage for you. And since they are a storage variety they will last for a long time in your fridge.

The last three weeks have been a little wild the last three weeks. First, we had two major thunderstorms (the first with hail) exactly one week apart and both times we lost power. Then, yesterday we received nearly 100mm of rain in 24 hours. Needless to say, the ground is a little mucky around here! The rain seems to have ushered in cooler fall temperatures but many of our fall crops are already harvested and stored in the greenhouse or cooler and the remaining crops in the field love the cool weather.

For those that love Hakurei spring turnips, we have a great fall planting that I will start harvesting this week. I think these turnips are actually tastier in the fall than the spring. The cooler weather makes them crisp and sweet and there are fewer insects to damage the roots. A new crop for the CSA this year is baby tatsoi. I grew a bunch last year for our family and as a trial and we loved it. Think of it like a cross between spinach and bokchoy. The leaves are dark green, juicy, and about the size of baby spinach. We love it tossed into a stirfry at the very end of cooking.

Finally, I've restocked our turkey products from Snyder Heritage Farms. Their turkey breasts make a nice alternative to cooking a whole turkey for Thanksgiving. We also have our final co-production ferment from Funky Ferments: Ginger Carrot Sauerkraut. This recipes uses organic ginger plus our delicious carrots and cabbage. Ferments are a great way to enjoy some crunchy, fresh vegetables through the winter months.
