Spring Share Week Four

Posted on June 5th, 2020 by Lorraine Blackwell

The greens are still going strong for Week 4 of the Spring Share! You will notice that weeks five and six start to include some new crops such as green onions, garlic scapes, kale, collards, red kohlrabi, hopefully peas, and maybe even some early zucchini. Yum! My seed potatoes arrived this week after being stuck in the mail for a month and I have been busy getting them all planted. One new potato variety I'm excited to try is call 'All Red' and it has red skin and flesh that has red streaks through it. It looks fun!

June tends to be the wildest month for getting things done on the farm. I am pushing through getting the last of the main crops planted (eggplant, winter squash, corn), the harvest starts to become plentiful, and the WEEDS grow six inches overnight (it seems). But if I stay on top of things in June, the rest of the season runs much more smoothly.

This next section applies only to those that have greens or lettuce add-ons:

Those of you that have greens add-ons will switch from getting spinach as your add-on to now rotating between kale, collards, and chard. The chard will still be a few weeks away but the kale and collards are just about ready to go. Add-ons are always 'farmer's choice' so you will whatever I decide is best for the week. We have three different varieties of kale (green curly, dinosaur, and red curly) plus the collards and rainbow chard. I am going to try to remember to list the variety of green you are receiving each week here in my notes so that you can plan what you might want in your main share accordingly.

Those of you that have salad add-ons will almost always receive a bag of salad mix. Occasionally, for variety and if crop availability demands it, you may receive 2 head lettuce instead. I will also try to note this here so that you know what to expect.

So, on that note, for this week:

Greens Add-on: Green Curly Kale

Salad Add-on: Salad Mix

I hope you have been able to enjoy the lovely weather we have been having so far this June!
