Week 14 - Final Farm Box and Art Show Invitation!

Posted on October 16th, 2023 by Jenny Berkenbosch

Welcome to the final farm share of the season!

FARM NEWS

As you can see from the frosty field photos, things are coming to their natural close. We have vegetables tucked away in storage to continue supplying the farmer's market booth that we operate in the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market year round, but otherwise it's nearly a wrap! There are a few frost tolerant items that will make it in the farm shares this weekend, and you might notice a difference in flavour and texture. Often things get sweeter and slightly dryer with the cold. One of the cool things about eating a locavore diet is that you can really experience the seasons on your plates!

I (Jenny) am busy preparing our annual staff feast for tomorrow evening and then this Sunday we say good bye to Jose, Juan Carlos, Macedonio, and Lucio. We've been so grateful for the excellent team we've had on the farm - they know how to get stuff done!!

We still have the large task of creating the next batch of no till beds. This has been difficult to get to this year somehow, but we're hoping to get them done the week following this one. Wish us luck!

THANK YOU!! (AND AUTO-RENEW)

We want to say a huge thank you to you for your patronage, for choosing local, and for your encouragement to us! We will be in touch with you when the membership renewals start up sometime in February. If you want to make sure you secure a spot for next season, just keep your auto renew toggled on (this is the default setting). If you're not sure now, you can always decide in February when we begin sending you notices of the auto-renew process. Just remember that if you turn auto renew off, you won't be notified when we begin taking signups for next season.

We'd like to hear from you about your experience with us this season, so please send us an email at jamesandjenny@sundogorganicfarm.ca if you have the time.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

This is a gem of a recipe from the Tomato Food and Drink magazine archives that has been part of my fall cooking repertoire since it appeared. We use our Jester Delicata squash for it and skip the butternut. It's a wonderful way to enjoy squash!

Here is a link to the recipe online:

ART SHOW INVITATION!

I (Jenny again!) want to invite you to my annual Sherry and Shortbread ART Sale on December 1 from 6-8, Dec. 2 from noon to 5, and Dec. 3 from noon to 4 all taking place in my studio on the farm. You can find a map to our farm here.

I will have several new paintings available for sale as well as a good inventory of work from previous years. There are a wide variety of sizes of both still life paintings and abstract landscapes inspired by our farm. I am so excited to share what I've been up to with you!

Here are a few of the small still life pieces that I've done over the summer. The first two are ranunculus flowers grown by flower farmer Heather Hanson of Boreal Blooms and painted from life in my studio using natural lighting. I have several more flower paintings as well as a selection of vegetable still life pieces such as the one below. These little 5x7" ones are $270 each, unframed, or $350 with a custom made frame.

I hope you can make it out for some Christmas music, homemade rosemary shortbread and sherry!

Take care of yourselves!

Warmly,

James and Jenny
