Are We Ready for Fall?!

Posted on September 19th, 2022 by Jenny Berkenbosch

***REMINDER***THERE ARE 6 WEEKS OF DELIVERIES REMAINING, THE LAST ONES BEING OCT. 28/29***

Can you feel the change in the air today? I've just finished making a giant pot of End of Summer Soup, filled to the brim with tomatoes, beans, celery and basil, but also with celeriac, parsnip, a hint rosemary and sage.  It's a blend of summer and fall and will warm our toes after this brisk, chilly day in the field.

One of the joys of eating seasonally is that we get to nourish our bodies with exactly what it needs!  Soups, stews, risottos and trays of roasted vegetables satisfy that craving for warming, starchy foods that keep us going when the winter sun shines less brightly for us.

We are bracing for a frost this week, and are looking forward to harvesting our winter squash crop tomorrow - it is one that just can't take the chill!  The squash will cure in our barn attic for a week or two and then be ready to put in your shares.

Some items that you can look forward to in the weeks to come are parsnip, celeriac (personal fave!), sunchoke, rutabaga and large, late season cabbage, grown in our no till beds, and perfect for making sauerkraut with.  If some of these items are new to you, give one or two a try, and if you're not sure what to do with the roots, cut them up, toss them in olive oil, a bit of coarse salt and roast them in the oven on medium/high heat. Always a hit in our house!

As always, I will attach some basic information about pickups, links to helpful Harvie tools and ways to get in touch with James or I.

We hope you have a great week, and that the transition into fall is a joyful one.

Warmly and with gratitude,

Jenny and James

What To Do if You Are Away

This is a question we get asked often. You have three options:

1) Have someone else pick up for you. In our experience, friends assigned this job sometimes forget, so help them remember!

2) Cancel your share for the week. This can be managed on your Harvie account page. It must be done before the Wednesday morning cutoff time of 6 a.m. The disadvantage here is that you lose whatever you have invested into that share. So if you've paid 50%, then you forfeit that amount.

3) Reschedule your share. This is our recommended option because it means you get your full value. What we suggest is that you reschedule your share to a week near the end when you will get more storage-friendly items that will last longer in your fridge, though you're welcome to reschedule to any date that works best for you. When you reschedule, you will get the scheduled share as well as the rescheduled share or shares, so be prepared for a lot of food.
