First Farm Share of the Season!

Posted on July 5th, 2021 by Jenny Berkenbosch

HELLLOOOOO FARM SHARE MEMBERS!!!

We are not sure about you, but this spring has been a whirlwind! Here we are, prepared for too much rain, and we are offered tropical temperatures and drought conditions!  We'd like to have a cordial conversation with Mother Nature....In fact, farming offers just such a conversation, but the way one listens and responds is through observation and action.  We are so excited to be learning more about soil health and the ways that we can participate in that magic.  We hope that you will join us for one of the two farm tours that we are offering to our farm share members (either one of July 25 or Aug. 22 - more details to come) when we hope to share with you some of the fascinating and hopeful things we've been learning about.

In field news, the recent heat wave created optimal conditions for our tomato, squash, cucumber, and corn crops, but suboptimal ones for the beautiful lettuces that we were counting on for your shares this week.  We will have more variety of product for you as the summer yields later items.  Eating produce from our fields is a wonderful opportunity to connect to your regional food - the hot dry weather encourages certain crops to grow and taste a certain way (hello spicy radishes!) and last year, when we had so much rain, your shares offered a different kind of eating experience.

Pictured above is James and Hannah, our farm intern for this summer, doing the weekly tomato pruning in our new coldframe.  We are very grateful for the help of our four staff this summer. We have Jose Juan, Porfirio, Tishawni and Hannah on our team and they each contribute very meaningfully to the functioning of our farm.

Some practical concerns to cover: you have until early Wednesday morning to make changes to your farm share either by swapping items or by adding extras. And an important note that we will keep bringing up for you because it is a change from last year: when you pick up your share, please bring a reusable shopping bag to pack your veggies in. We'd love to reduce our plastic dependence! We will be sending some location specific emails to let you know what to expect at your chosen pickup spot.  We are absolutely thrilled with our various pickups and love working with the local businesses that support us in this way! We hope you show them some love❤️.

We are so thankful to have you along for the ride this season!

Warmly,

Jenny and James
