Farm Happenings for July 6, 2021

Posted on July 2nd, 2021 by Mike Kozlowski

Hello! We've made it through this heat wave with minimal damage in the garden. It was pretty touch and go in terms of getting enough water out there to keep everything alive. A few of our crops started to go seed prematurely - notably arugula and broccoli.

The arugula is still salvageable but you might find a few flowers in your bags. Arugula flowers are edible but are not typically found in the arugula you would buy from the store. Expect that these flowers will have an especially concentrated arugula flavor.

In terms of the broccoli, my concern is that I'm seeing heads form on plants that are not fully mature so I'm expecting that they will keep forming early and give us very small heads more like broccolini. That's a bummer but the heat just didn't do them any favors and there wasn't' any way to cool them down. You will likely see these broccolis in your box in the next few weeks.

Finally, some of our radishes have some blemishes on them that I'm a little bit disappointed about. But do not worry, despite looking a little bit strange they are delicious.

I hope you enjoy your first veggie box of the season. It is greens heavy at the moment. I think that after this heat wave any food that doesn't need to be cooked will be welcome.
