Farm Happenings for September 26, 2018: Winter Squash Failure and Alex's Campaign

September 26 - We Escaped!

I'm writing this from Stockholm, Wisconsin where my brother is getting married this weekend as Fall comes in right on schedule.  We were slowed last night on our drive as strong storms hit in a line that extended from Kansas to Wisconsin -- what a front!  It's nice to get away from the farm, but also pretty chaotic.

Bad Winter Squash?

It's likely that many of you ended up with a rotten winter squash in your share -- we're very sorry!  We discovered this week that our entire storage crop of winter squash suddenly rotted from the inside out: every single squash.  It's very disheartening as this has never happened before.  We've heard rumors of other growers with similar problems, but we're still figuring out what happened.  We thought we had nicely cured, high quality crop...and then they were all a rotten puddle -- they just fell apart in ways Chloe has never seen in her 15 years of growing.

It appears there are a few possible fungi that can create this nightmare, but unfortunately, there's no turning back the clock and it means that you won't be receiving any squash from us this year.  These moments are so hard because we put so much time and energy into the crop...for nothing.  I'm sorry if you received a rotten squash, but this situation is a new one for us and we're scrambling to make sure it's a once-in-a-blue-moon issue.

Norris Public Power Board

I am running for the Norris Public Power Board and would love your support!  I don't need any money, just help reaching folks in Hickman, Roca, Sprague, Martell and surrounding areas.  If you know anyone in these communities, please let them know I'm not a moron! ;-)

I've got a facebook page, www.facebook.com/alex4nppd, and you can also visit www.scienceforus.org for proof that I'm a reasonable guy.  There you'll find my new podcast, Science For the Rest of Us, where I talk to nerds about nerdy topics in hopes of understanding the facts behind controversial debates in our society today.  Two guarantees: you'll learn something, but there will also be boredom.

Nebraska is the only state in the country with 100% publicly-owned power, and I'm excited for the opportunity to be a part of this unique tradition.

Fall starts at 7:34pm on Saturday -- enjoy the cool temps and thanks for your support!
