Farm Happenings for October 20, 2020

Posted on October 19th, 2020 by Anna Bunk

Greeting farmshare members,

*For Full Season and Heart of the Season farmshare members who haven't already, please take a minute to give us your feedback through this 2020 farmshare survey. Fall members, we will send a separate survey at the end of the season. Thank you!*

We are deep into fall these days with morning meetings requiring layers of sweaters and a hot drink in hand.

The sun rising later each day and setting earlier is a gentle nudge towards the long nights up ahead. We are just a week away from the start of the Persephone Period, the time when days see the sun for ten hours or less. Plants mostly stop growing from the limited sunlight and cooler temperatures. But fortunately for all of us, our climate is so mild that although their growth slows, many crops stay alive so we are able to harvest into the winter months.

This year, Matt sowed seeds a bit later than we usually would (and more of them!) with the hopes of extending our season for even longer. With the help of some greenhouse cover and row cover, we are hoping to supplement our root crops and winter squash at market with fresh greens - in the winter! Fingers crossed we have a mild winter and we succeeded in getting the planting dates correct! We are still learning...

We’ve been working to come up with a plan for how to get more produce to you this winter so please stay tuned for more info.

Hope you enjoy your share this week!
