Farm Happenings (#4 DELIVERY SUMMER out of 20)

Posted on June 15th, 2023 by Diane Riehm

Farm Happenings

See the video below of the farm crew planting now for an expected harvest of Sweet Potatoes.

We are using our faith muscles as farmers again, believing our CSA Market Box members will also join us this winter.

Sweet potatoes will be ready to consume from October to January.

I want to give you the state of the current harvest...

We have had trouble with the weather since May 18th. A percentage of our plants froze plus the lack of rain for 3 straight weeks has slowed the harvest.

Don't get discouraged!

Especially if you are new to our CSA boxes this year.

If you cannot find items you wanted on a certain week maybe it is not in season yet.

On the weeks that you do not see items that you want, PLEASE just scroll to the "yellow skip button" at the bottom of your shopping cart (upper righthand corner).

There is NO NEED to cancel your summer season entirely.

Farmers NEED YOU to purchase regularly and directly from them.

Remember, in a few weeks more items will become available and seasons change!

Farmer Phil's TOP 5 this week!

These LOOK healthy!
* TASTE oh-so good!
* Harvesting PLENTY right NOW!

1. Asparagus - probably 1 week of harvesting left, maybe 2 weeks at the most.
2. Beef - we are long on steaks, roast, and hamburger.
3. Microgreens -
we have a big seeding coming.
4. Bok choy - looks good with only about 2 weeks left in the spring season. We don't do a summer season because the crop doesn't like the hot weather. We will grow bok choy again in the fall.
5. Garlic scapes - Mother nature didn't provide us with an abundance of crop this year as some died over winter. What is still growing looks nice and will only be available for a week or two enjoy them while you can.

Steaks, Roasts, and Hamburger, OH MY...

Plan to stock up your freezer TODAY! We have plenty of BEEF at this current time.

Your summer grill'n and dinner plates will be spectacular.

GO AHEAD and set yourself up TODAY for an easy-peasy month!

By having several cuts of beef on hand to pull from your freezer rather than making those dreaded weekly trips to the store creates satisfying convivence.

DON"T HESITATE to learn the trick to frozen beef.
1. Take a cut of beef from your freezer a few times a week.
2. Grab a plate to lay underneath each time.
3. Place in your refrigerator.

GO FOR IT! You'll have a thawed piece of meat the next day. Use within 3-4 days.

Oh my goodness, the YUMMY comes to your TUMMY!!

The Ring Master has decided on Microgreens FOR THE WIN...

In the first corner was farmer Phil!

In the second corner was his dad Farmer John!

Now the interesting discussion was HOW TO GROW microgreens in a way that csa box members would enjoy them?!

The match began...

Phil thought "CSA members may not value these gems" and John said, "You never know until you try."

They duked it out over seed choices, containers, and how much to invest.

The final round came in May...

John grew a few flats the first week and they sold out. The next week, John grew more and they sold out also.

We considered the voice of our customers as our referees of this match.

The referees declared FARMER JOHN the WINNER by your repeat sales!

Customers said they purchased them for MANY reasons:
1. They were NOT CUT so customers put them in their window sill and had longer than 3 days to use them.
2. Adoration for the flavor profile added to their sandwiches and salads.
3. Nutritional benefits were loved by all.

GIVE IT A TRY!

Farmer John has big seeding of microgreens ready for you.

Let me tell you, nothing tastes better than when you grab a handful of garlic scapes that you have flash frozen...

Garlic scapes are known to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, boost the immune system, and prevent heart disease.
