Farm Happenings for August 24, 2020

Posted on August 22nd, 2020 by Emma Rainwater

Hi Friends!

It's hard to believe that August is almost over and we're approaching the fall. We did an early harvest on some of our winter squash and while we're between successions on zucchini we will have delicatas available in the shares this week. We'll also have a few bonus items this week - we have tons of nice basil as well as lots of seconds heirloom tomatoes (weird shapes, cracked, etc) that will be great if you're interested in preserving sauce, salsa, pesto, etc.

Basil will be automatically added to your shares but reply to let me know if you'd like a few pounds of the seconds heirlooms.

This past week I started planting fall greens - spinach, arugula, more lettuce, and we'll be getting some bok choi, radishes, and napa cabbage planted in the next few days. It's been a heavy pest/disease year for a few crops, so unfortunately we won't have any more eggplant this season, but the peppers are finally catching up so we'll have lots of green/purple bell peppers this week and if the temperatures keep steady we should have red/yellow bell peppers in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks as always to all of you for bearing with us this season - there's definitely a few crops that have been less productive and smaller than I'd have liked and we've been making lots of notes for next year as the season has gone on. If things are looking better with the pandemic in the spring we'll bring on a couple of extra hands next year which will make a HUGE difference in how well we're able to manage the farm and do a better job keeping up with the weeds and pests.

Thank you so much, hope you and your families are safe and healthy,

Emma, Naomi, & Norah
