Farm Happenings for July 27, 2020

Posted on July 25th, 2020 by Emma Rainwater

Hi Friends! Tomatoes are here - hooray!

We've just started to get the first ripe heirloom tomatoes and the cherry tomatoes are in full swing now with lots ripening on the vines every day. We're well stocked with eggplant, cucumbers, and garlic, plus now that we've had more rain the squash is starting to grow more regularly (so we won't have to put any more giant/tiny squash in the shares!). Our peppers are finally starting to set fruit and we should have green peppers available in the shares in the next week or two as well as our next round of carrots.

We'll be digging some potatoes this week - unfortunately we got hit hard with potato bugs this year and I'm expecting the potatoes will be smaller than usual, and in pretty limited quantities. We planted them fairly early and they got a good head start, so hopefully it'll turn out better than I expect but we won't know until we dig them out.

Overall things on the farm are looking good - we should have lots of greens once we get into August and will be planting more stir fry mix, arugula, and spinach pretty soon as we approach September and some cooler weather.

I'm so grateful to all our farm share members, this year especially as we've definitely had some challenges and you've all been so wonderful about bearing with us. Between the pandemic, the weather, the pest issues, figuring out harvie, and farming with a newborn it's been one of our more difficult seasons so far and we're really so thankful to our members for your support.

Stay cool out there!

Emma, Naomi, & Norah
