Farm Happenings for August 16, 2022

Posted on August 11th, 2022 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Happy sunny Thursday, everyone

Been some properly muggy, summer days out there this past week, with that little hint of fall on either end of the day: it's pretty dark by 9pm, and the nights are cool. It goes by so fast sometimes! I feel very lucky to have such a good farm crew and a fairly efficient market garden set-up, that we all get along really well together and are able to take half a day off at least once in the summer to enjoy this time of year. A lot of farms don't get to do that because they're so flat out busy, and miss a lot of the recreational joys of summer. While we love being busy, getting off the farm once in a while is a good reset and keeps you motivated, and that's important when your home is also your work.

I love seeing the storage crops getting ready this time of year - it feels like the best kind of security blanket! The kabocha and spaghetti winter squash are just about ready. Not sure we'll be able to get in there to harvest them (I always plant them waaay too close together :P) but I am really excited to try them out. We'll have sweet onions for the next few weeks, until the cooking onions are ready. A lot of the heat-loving veggies are peaking now too, like the lemon cucumbers and eggplants. After this veggie box goes out, we'll have potatoes from Earl Wilson of Silver Birch Farm on West Fraser Rd, and hopefully garlic soon from Buck Ridge Ranch.

See you all Tuesday. Thanks for all the support and hope you're getting some time in that beauty sunshine!
