CSA shares for Sept 21 - IMPORTANT NOTES!

Posted on September 18th, 2021 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Happy soggy Saturday to you all!

Sorry the customization email is going out a bit later again this week: we had a couple external crops just confirmed yesterday, namely more Sieglinde potatoes and fingerling potatoes from Buck Ridge Ranch. We will put the fingerlings in the boxes and Sieglindes will be available as extras. If you've never tried fingerling potatoes, they may look a little funny but they are delicious! Like early potatoes, they have a thin skin but are also lower in starch, so they have a very mild, buttery flavour when cooked up, and they cook up fast. So they are a great option for a quick meal, which we usually don't use potatoes for!

We also have the LAST of the local, no-spray apples from Tom Salley of Mackin Creek Orchards this week. There are 3 different varieties of McIntosh apples, all with their own unique colours, texture, and flavour. McIntosh apples can store for 5-8 months under the right conditions (2-3C) so they will be available in bulk bags, as well as smaller amounts in the shares.

PRE-ORDER BULK STORAGE CROPS

We are pulling storage crops out of the ground now so are taking pre-orders. The potatoes may have to go with the Sept 28th shares, but we'll keep track of those orders in advance. You will see these on the EXTRAS page:

- cylindra beets 20lb bags* (Puddle Produce Farm/Silver Birch Farm)
- storage carrots 20lb bags*
- Sieglinde or red potatoes 40lb units (Buck Ridge Ranch and Gardens/Silver Birch Farm)*
- winter squash 40lb mix variety
- cured red and yellow onions 20lb box
- garlic 1lb bags (Buck Ridge Ranch and Gardens)
- McIntosh apples 15lb bags (Mackin Creek Orchard)

*NOTE: these crops are sold unwashed. This way, they store MUCH better and we can offer them at a lower price.

LAST FEW WEEKS OF CSA PROGRAM

Based on what we have left in the ground, I am projecting 3 more weeks of CSA shares, weather permitting. This puts us at OCTOBER 5th for our last CSA shares (1 week earlier than our projected end date at sign-up time). I want to make sure we have enough, so what I am thinking is making the last week of shares a type of "End-of-Season Harvest Box", loaded with a bit of everything including the last of our external products. This share would be priced at $35 but include $45-50 of product. The $35 value will be customizable, and the remaining value will be a surprise! Please let me know if anyone has any objections to this idea!

ALL PICK-UPS MOVING TO MINT&LIME FOR LAST WEEK

The last Tuesday evening farmers' market is Sept 28th, which means there will be no market pick-up option for Oct 5th shares. So ALL shares (other than home delivery) will be available for pick-up at Mint&Lime on October 5th.

I think that's it for now! Please do let me know if you have any issues or concerns with the plans for the last 3 weeks of the CSA program. Thank you all so much!

Your Farmer,

- Brianna
