Farm Happenings for September 10, 2021

Posted on September 7th, 2021 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Hey everyone,

Hope you had great long weekends out there. Looks like we're about to get another small dose of sunny, warm days, but at this time of year, this means cold nights. We were surprised when we went to our lower plot yesterday to find 1/3 of our squash patch dead from frost damage. That plot is in a dip down by the river so the coldest air settles right on the veggies and squash cannot handle anything colder than 0C.

NEW ADDITIONS THIS WEEK:

We have garlic! From Buck Ridge Ranch and Gardens. We will put 1/3 pound into each box, but there will also be 1lb amounts available on the extras page if you want some to hold over for the next few months. As we are getting into the storage crop side of the year, we also have some bulk amounts of cylindra beets from Silver Birch Farm (awesome for canning), more 2 and 5lb bags of carrots, as well as white and Sieglinde potatoes. If you want 10 or 20lb bags of storage potatoes, we will be getting red potatoes from Buck Ridge in a few weeks that keep forever

Our winter squash is coming on! The earliest varieties - Delicata and Acorn - are ready. If you haven't tried Delicata, it's amazing. The name refers to its delicate skin, which - unlike most other winter squash - you can eat. It also cooks very quickly, so you can add it as a side to a meal that needs to happen asap. I love any Delicata recipe that involves maple syrup, like this one.We will also have lots of spaghetti and butternut squash, but they need a few more weeks to ripen up.

Thanks, everyone. See you Friday!

Your Farmer,

Brianna
