Our CSA is Half Way!

Posted on August 7th, 2021 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Happy Weekend, everyone

The ground looks like it got a little shower overnight here in Soda Creek. Hope it's the same for many of you - especially with the forecast for next week! Another hot one predicted.

We've had another few beds of broccoli mature this past week so those are in the boxes. One crop I've had trouble with the last few seasons is cauliflower: normally, you would have seen it in your shares by now but for some reason, (likely some nutrient fluctuations) it does not appreciate the plot I have been growing it in and every planting I've done develops anthocyanin and ricing. Cauliflower-growing terms for a purple tinge and sprouting on the cauliflower head. So I will see if I can get you all some good locally grown cauliflower! But for now, that is a crop that we likely won't have ourselves this year, sadly.

We are going into our 9th week for CSA shares, which means we are half way done! Can't wait to start getting some storage crops out of the ground. I'll be pulling a lot of the bulb onions this weekend as the tops are falling over and this means they are ready to cure. Cured onions are one of my favourite storage crops because they last even longer than winter squash and garlic in the right conditions: 10-11 months in a cool and dry pantry or basement. I was eating last year's onions up until a few weeks ago. Will have some bulk amounts for purchase once the curing process is complete which usually takes 4-5 weeks.

Thanks, everyone. As always, please do let me know if you are ever missing an item in your share, or received one incorrectly. I will credit your account. See you next week!

Your farmer,

Brianna
