Week 5 of our Seasonal Veggie Box Program

Posted on July 8th, 2021 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Happy Thursday, everyone!

Despite the smokey haze today, it was nice to have some shade from the sun. Probably like most of you, we are feeling a little run down with the heat, but the early mornings sure are a blessing!

We have another planting of bok choi ready for next week. I never used to eat choi until I started growing it, and now I love it as one of my main greens. I will go for any green that can be eaten either raw or cooked, and choi is perfect: unlike some larger garden greens, the stems are juicy and not tough. I will often make a salad with choi and this carrot ginger dressing, which is amazing! Or a ramen - another go-to meal that is really fast to make, but filling. We happen to have all the veggies and eggs for this ramen recipe!I also love offering choi because it;s one of those veggies that you almost never get organic in the grocery store.

We also have a lot more broccoli, cabbage, and summer squash to go around next week. The basil is getting huge now, so we like to offer bulk bags this time of year (those will be listed as an extra this week). When I preserve basil, I put it in the food processor with olive oil only and freeze it in ice cube trays. That way, you can use it for lots of meals in addition to pesto.

The last of some plantings are going in the ground in the next couple weeks: storage carrots and beets, fall broccoli and cabbage, and overwintering crops like green onions, spinach, and lettuce greens. It's always a bit strange to think of fall and overwintering at this time of year, but it's just the nature of counting backwards when gardening. We will offer bulk prices for these crops, as well as the other storage crops in the ground (onions, winter squash, etc.) before the CSA program is over in mid October.

We are back on schedule for Tuesday evening farmers' market pick-ups as of July 13th. Thanks again for your patience with those changes, and to Mint & Lime for hosting the extra boxes in their space the last 2 weeks!

That's it for now, everyone! I'd like to take this time to say a huge thanks to you all for your support so far this season - the security and planning that your commitment offers makes a huge difference to us and our peace of mind during the season. We truly appreciate you joining us and the CSA program, and hope with all our hearts that you like the veggies!

As always, please be in touch with any questions or feedback. Thanks so much, everyone!

Your farmer,

Brianna
