2nd to Last Week of Fall CSA Shares!

Posted on October 11th, 2020 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Hope you're all having some GREAT Thanksgiving weekends out there! I'm sure many of you are not able to spend it with any or all of your families. But I hope you're still able to sit back and enjoy a good meal with those you love in your bubbles :)

My family doesn't live here in the Cariboo so I am still putting away veggies this weekend, before we get a hard frost, and also for my own use during the winter. This time of year is often the last chance I have to put some of the garden away for winter use. My fave options are freezing or curing, but I like canning or drying for their space-saving ability. Canning just takes a lot of time so I like to freeze jars of roasted tomato sauce, for example, or put away cured crops, like storage onions, garlic, and winter squash. A good tip: you can freeze liquids in canning jars, as long as they are WIDE MOUTH. The tapered jars will crack with the expanding liquid but wide mouth jars will not. So that's my lazy canning method!!

As per the subject line, and based on what's left in the fields, this is the 2nd LAST WEEK of the Fall CSA shares!! It works out well with your deposits, as next week will be the 5th week of shares. We still have some new crops this week too! Which is a fun surprise. They are in limited amounts, but this week we have:

- Watermelon radishes: a delicious variety of winter radish, which is a cool-season, more dense radish type that has a similar texture to turnips. They also store far longer than spring/summer radishes (months in the fridge). These ones are sweet or spicy, and pink inside!!

- Green and red butterheads: this will be the last of the lettuce. Small butterheads (2 per bag) that are already bite-sized for salads, or sandwiches/wraps

- Romanesco cauliflower: these are super-cool cauliflowers (some call them broccolis, but the texture is more like a cauliflower) that are sweet and just amazing to look at. Sadly, we don't have many this week but want to catch them before any frost hits. Hopefully, we will have more next week. They are smaller than they normally would be but still delicious!

- BULK carrots: we have a storage variety of carrot called Bolero. This variety is a nantes type (the only type we grow) that is best suited for long-term storage. We are selling these in 5lb bags UNWASHED. This is because unwashed carrots will last you far longer than washed, in the fridge. Right up to March or April. They are cheaper per pound, however, than our washed varieties. They are also small-med in size. We also still have some Sieglinde potatoes available.

ALL PICK-UPS/DELIVERIES ON WEDNESDAY THIS WEEK!

Now that both farmers' markets have wrapped up, all boxes (apart from home deliveries) will be at Mint & Lime by 2:30pm on Wednesday this week and next.

Thanks, everyone. Let me know any questions or concerns, as always. Look forward to seeing some of you next week! Enjoy this amazing time of year with your friends and families.
