Farm Update for FRIDAY shares!

Posted on September 30th, 2020 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Hey everyone! Hope you liked your first Fall CSA shares, and are able to get through, or save, the higher volume of produce. I do love this time of year for all the veggies that you can keep in your fridge or pantry for a good while. Nice bit of insurance!

NEW CROPS THIS WEEK:

We were able to secure some new varieties of potatoes from Buck Ridge Ranch and Gardens on West Fraser Rd. Dave and Rose normally specialize in garlic but they planted a BIG garden this year! So they have lots of produce. We purchased some lovely Sieglinde and fingerling potatoes for you all this week! We are going to offer the Sieglindes both in 2lb quantities, as well as bulk for storing, because Sieglindes are a great storage potato and we can give bulk purchases unwashed, which will store much better. The fingerlings are more of a fresh-eating type of potato. Both have thin skins and very delicate, tasty flesh. Some of the best taters out there!

We also have a crop of lovely Ming choy. It's the same as bok or pac choy, really. They grow really well in the cooler temps of spring and fall, so I like to do a late planting of this green. I love choy not only for hot dishes (like your classic stir fry or a homemade ramen), but also as a salad green. The greens are delicious and the stems are juicy and crunchy, but not fibrous like Swiss chard or mustards. Here is a great salad recipe for choy.

Buckwheat shoots are on the list as well. These are my new favourite microgreen! Buckwheat is related to rhubarb and sorel, so this cute little baby version has a nice mild tang to it. And it's just a beautiful green leaf, with a lovely pink stem. They hold up well as well, but are delicate to eat.

Lastly, we also got a planting of Chioggia beets just in time! They are on the smaller side, but the greens are really lovely so we want to include those before it gets cold. Chioggia beets are an heirloom variety from Italy with a beautifully striped bulls-eye pattern inside. Try them sliced thinly in a salad just for the visual appeal! The greens are really good sauteed as well.

Then we have all the other usuals this week!

AN UPDATE ON LENGTH OF FALL SHARES: As I've mentioned before, I have been keeping an eye on what we have left in the fields to be able to get a better idea of how long we can do the Fall shares. I have determined that we will indeed need to cut it a bit short. There likely won't be enough to go the full 8 weeks. Big apologies to everyone! I hope to plan a bit better in the future, to make sure we have enough variety and volume left the go the full 8 weeks. But I know for sure we can do another 2-3 weeks minimum. I will keep you all updated! And if there is any box values remaining, you will get those back either in the form of a refund or extra produce. Thanks for understanding, everyone.

That's it for now! So we'll see you all WEDNESDAY or FRIDAY this week (if you come to the farmer's market Fridays) Thanks so much for your support!
