Farm Update for July 28, 2020

Posted on July 23rd, 2020 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Hey there, CSA custies!

Hope you've all had good weeks and enjoyed some sunshine yesterday. Was a little tough to adjust to it, probably! After all this rain and cool weather. But it certainly makes the plants jump up pretty fast.

So a couple new items this week, and reminders on blueberries and bread. We'll start with those! A REMINDER: if you're getting blueberries or bread, and you are a farmers' market pick-up, I will deliver your share on Tuesday instead. Please just send me a quick note with the address you'd like it delivered to (within City limits).

BLUEBERRIES: We are getting everyone's blueberry orders for next week's boxes!! So if you've pre-ordered them in the last couple weeks, you'll get them in your shares this week. If you are a Mint & Lime pick-up, I would recommend getting your share Tuesday if you have blueberries, as they will want to be put in a fridge or freezer pretty quickly! They are on the list again today as a last chance to order them, but I'll need to know final numbers by tonight at 6pm!!

BREAD: We are able to order Annette Fischer's fabulous baking again this week. Last time, we didn't quite order enough to meet her minimum (she bakes especially for us, and has to deliver from 150 Mile), so we're going to try again but we'll need to get the numbers up in order to keep her on board! So if you were thinking of ordering her bread, now is the time to do it :) It also freezes really well if you want to stock up, since she bakes for us only bi-weekly. Here they are again:

- House Bread (multigrain)

white and whole what flour, spelt, rye, cracked wheat, and seeds such as sunflower, flax, and/or pumpkin, water, yeast, sourdough, salt.

- Farmer Milk Bread

Made with local, raw farmer milk!

- Spelt Bread (organic)

organic spelt flour, spelt flakes, water, yeast, salt, malt

- Witch Stick Bread

white flour, whole wheat, spelt, cracked wheat, seeds such as sunflower, flax, and/or pumpkin, water, yeast, sourdough, salt.

- Zopf Bread

white flour, water, milk, butter, yeast, salt, malt. Glazed with egg yolk.

NEW CROPS THIS WEEK:

This week, we have some of the hot crops coming on. We have a small amount of Hungarian hot wax peppers that are ready. For the hot pepper lovers, these are a medium variety of Capsicum annum with a wide Scoville scale range of 1,000 to 15,000 Scoville units.

We also have cucumbers ready! These are a variety called Corinto, which does well in both cool and hot climates. Few seeds in the middle, that are also small, and the skin is sturdy like a field cucumber but thin enough to eat.

We also have everyone's favourite vegetable....fennel!! ok, not really :P But I hope you are adventurous and try fennel, if you haven't already. It's one of those vegetables that tastes amazing when paired with the right flavours. One that goes VERY well with fennel is Parmesan!! Here is one of my fave recipes.I am doing mini fennel this year instead of the super huge ones, in case folks just want to try it out.

SOON: Tomatoes are starting to ripen and hopefully we can get some of those to you in the next couple weeks.

Thanks everyone. Again, if you are a market pick-up, please let me know where I can deliver your shares next Tuesday!! See you all then :)
