Farm Update - Whoa, July?!?

Posted on June 28th, 2020 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Hi, everyone!

I was kind of shocked the other day when I realized ...it was almost July! But also that we just had summer solstice. We still have the bulk of the summer climate to get through, but - unlike spring, when day length and heat units are increasing - after the summer solstice, we are already thinking about fall and winter plantings. Making sure certain transplants are ready to go in for the winter, as their growth rates will soon start slowing down rather than speeding up. It's weird to think of now, but important in making sure you have things in the ground with enough time to mature so that they can just sit there, waiting to be harvested, come September and October.

But! SO many crops yet to come on, that are already in the ground. This week, we have some new crops to choose from. Thanks again, to everyone, for your patience this past week with putting the boxes on hold and getting our customization period reorganized. We also worked on securing some additional products for box members to choose from, and I'll put that in a separate newsletter very soon! (think something that goes well with PB & J ;)

June is the month of weeding, especially with all this rain. We have to weed pretty much the whole farm, within a 2 week rotation, otherwise they get too big to work with hand tools. It can tough to do with the rain, however, because you can't really use hand tools to weed when the soil is wet. So timing it with the weather is key.

Thanks for your organic cherry orders! We will have those ready with this week's deliveries: if you want them as of Tuesday, however, please do feel free to come by the farmers' market to grab them! We'll have them there. We will also let you know in our next newsletter which other fruit options we will have available. Usually, those available this season are blueberries, apricots, peaches (not freestone yet), and cherries for a bit longer. We have some extras ordered so you can still place an order before 5pm tonight if you want any! They are $7.29/lb or $7/lb for orders more than 5lbs.

BOX RETURNS: Thank you so much for all the box returns! If you still have any, they can be returned to M&L or the farmers' market (Tues or Fri)

Thanks again, everyone, for your support!
