Week 2 of Your CSA Shares

Posted on June 6th, 2020 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Hello again, veggie friends! It feels like we just read one of these farm updates, doesn't it?! It's time to customize your shares again, for Tuesday and Wednesday deliveries! And going forward, I will actually send out the customization emails a little earlier, so that we can get your orders in by Friday morning. As volume increases, we will use that extra time to fit all the harvesting in. But for this coming week, the customization cut-off day and time will be tomorrow, June 7th @ 8am.

We really hope you all enjoyed your first week of shares! It always take a week or 2 to get in the groove, so we really appreciate everyone's patience. Big thanks to the ladies at Mint & Lime: they have been really positive and super helpful about distributing the bulk of the CSA shares there. Just a reminder that they will kindly hold on to peoples' empty boxes if they want to switch them out when they pick up their veggies, or drop them off there. Which is great!

We also confirmed with the Williams Lake Farmers' Market yesterday that the Tuesday evening market is going to start as of June 16th. So anyone with Tuesday market pick-ups preferences can grab their shares there! They will post more about times, etc. on the facebook page, but it will run from 2-7pm in the same location as the regular Friday market.

One of the new crops on the list this week are a neat little root veggie called Hakurei turnips. Some also call them salad turnips. You may have picked them up at the market before: they kind of look like a cross between a radish and a turnip. There is more info and some neat-looking recipes here, but I would recommend against roasting or boiling them like a regular turnip. They are super delicate and have higher water content, so they will not taste like much if they're boiled especially. You don't want to peel them either. I suggest first trying them raw if you haven't already! They are amazing on a salad, or just for snacking. They are also amazing pan-fried: I usually just coin them about 1/2" thick, and fry them on med-high heat with butter, garlic, salt and pepper. Just to brown on both sides. You can toss the chopped greens in at the end and add a little sesame oil, and it's super good! This is one of those crops that is unique to local farming and CSAs: they are never on grocery store shelves, likely because they are too difficult to keep presentable and transport.

It's raining pretty steadily as I write this, so it's a perfect day to plant tomatoes in the greenhouse! Normally, we would have put them in about a month ago but we didn't get the beds ready until this week. So they might be a few weeks late, but hopefully not more more than that.

Thanks again for all your lovely feedback so far, everyone: let me know any questions, concerns, or changes you might have! And if you ever have technical questions around using Harvie, please also feel free to email their support team at support@harvie.farm

Thanks, everyone. Your Tues/Wed pick-ups and deliveries will be ready Tuesday, June 9th after 2:30pm!
