Farm Happenings for October 28, 2020

Posted on October 26th, 2020 by Ben Sayler

Greetings from the Farm!

It's garlic planting time at the NEW farm. We are working to get the 2021 garlic crop planted this week. Each clove of a bulb is used as the 'seed' that will grow into a garlic plant. We hand plant them into a plastic mulch late fall, they sprout, and then go dormant during the very cold days of winter. When temperatures rise in late winter the plants are ready to grow very rapidly. In June the flower shoots, or scapes, are harvested. The bulbs are usually ready to be picked the first week of July. Garlic is one of our favorite plants to grow on the farm.

Also on the new farm we have seeded spinach, radishes, turnips, and salad greens.

As you have noticed in the heads of lettuce, we have an aphid issue on the farm. These little bugs are very difficult to kill. We do our best to rinse them off before packing into shares, but simply cannot get them all out of the heads because they hide down in the leaves. They are harmless and can be rinsed off as you peel the leaves to use in the kitchen. If a few insects are an issue for you, please do not include lettuce heads in your order.

We have lots of new items on the menu this week including broccoli, cherry tomatoes, new pork products, applesauce, bread, and more!

Farm Extras shares will be getting a loaf of bread.
