Farm Happenings for September 28, 2021

Posted on September 23rd, 2021 by Grayson Crane

Hi CSA Members,

Fall sure came in a hurry! Compared to last years slow and sunny roll into October, this September has been wet and cold down here at the farm. We've been busy moving the sheep, pulling everything we can out of the field, and completing soil testing before we cover crop the majority of our fields. All this wet means that we have to move quickly, as one of the most important soil nutrients (Nitrogen) moves very fast through soil when wet. Cover crop does a lot of different things for us, but one of the main ones is taking up all the leftover nitrogen and other water soluble soil nutrients before they get washed away in our wet winters. We like to run the sheep one last time through before since it gives them an extra bite to eat, and lays down more nutrients that we can tap into right away when we fold our cover crop back in come Spring.

This week's box brings what may be the last of the tomatoes! We'll also have some green tomatoes in boxes this week. This also marks the return and last march of corn, and the continued parade of the winter squashes. Enjoy!
