Farm Happenings for September 29, 2022

Posted on September 23rd, 2022 by Timothy Lyon

At this time of year, preparation for next season, and finishing out the current one, hang balanced. Rather than outright competition for our attention, there's a dovetail of the two seasons. Some tasks are complete synergy, such as a current crop which is cut down and incorporated into the soil to accompany a cover crop. Others are more of a toss up, such as a high tunnel we want to take down before stormy Autumn winds threaten the structure, and cherry tomatoes which want to keep ripening in it. Cover crops are going in earlier than in the past, and we're excited to see how they grow and fulfil their role of feeding the soil, retaining moisture, and reducing pressure from non-crop plants.

It has been another great season on the farm, and as Thanksgiving draws near we find ourselves all the more thankful for each part of the natural process of plant growth we've gotten to be part of, and the fruit the plants have yielded, to our pleasure and nourishment.
