Farm Happenings for July 7, 2022

Posted on July 4th, 2022 by Timothy Lyon

We've gotten past the hump of major transplanting season, and the ensuing tiredness. We've passed the points of two June birthdays we celebrate in our family. And we're enjoying the many sunny days, while we lament the drought and lack of water to nourish the plants to full size. So we've been busy installing extra irrigation to ensure everything has adequate water. Did you know lack of water can cause thick-skinned tomatoes, and decrease the capacity of plants to launch immune response and thus cause them to become stressed? We want to avoid that happening.

Now we're turning our efforts to cleaning up the permanent crops, weeding, feeding and re-mulching them. And, continuing to seed new successions of crops already in the ground. And, re-establishing the herb beds. We'll also be rogue weeding to rid the farm of thistles, and and other plants which produce a heavy seed-load, filling the soil around us with an excessive amount of one variety.
