Farm Happenings for June 16, 2022

Posted on June 13th, 2022 by Timothy Lyon

We're delighted with the recent rain. And, the overcast skies have helped us get transplants in without the sun scorching them to death (despite irrigation).

Pickup & Delivery

Bags and Boxes

We keep our plastic use to a minimum, and work with you to reduce yours too. Please supply us with cloth bags and containers to put your veggies into for transport. As the tomato season approaches we will reduce plastic in landfill by re-purposing plastic strawberry, blueberry and cherry tomato containers for delivered tomatoes. Please bring any you have on hand to the packing crew at the barn, or leave them in your Rubbermaid bin at pickup.

Box Cleaning

We generally use the same (Rubbermaid) bin for your share each time, replacing only the sticker. That means we can rely on whatever packaging you leave in it to pack your share. And, when you pick up your share, you'll find cloths and spray bottle of cleaning solution for your use. Please give it a wipe down so we can pack your veggies into a clean bin. Take a clean cloth each time, and discard used ones in the "Dirty Cloths" container for us to launder. We have a hands-free wash station on site for you to wash your hands before you leave with your veggies. NEW in 2022: bin cleaning tools will be left out for Sunday shares.

Reschedule or Hold a Delivery

We know some of you signed up this year because you knew you weren't travelling this Summer, so it's your opportunity to try a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture veggie box). Others joined out of concern for food security: by choosing a farmer and supporting them, you increase Kingston food production and get yourself on the list in case of shortages. You also know we train others in agriculture, so you're participating in building a food secure Kingston because you're helping build resilient farms within our community. Even so, you might occasionally need to Reschedule or Hold a delivery - here's how.

Pickup times

In the midst of Covid-19 we took on a lot more Bicycle Deliveries - which we love - and rearranged pickup locations and times to meet your requests. As a result, the e-mail you get doesn't always match the time you have arranged for pickup, or the delivery time you expected. Please pickup / anticipate delivery at the time you've arranged with us, and over look the time in the e-mail unless it squares with your calendar and what we've told you. Sorry for this system glitsch! In general:

Thursday pickups at Barn are 4-6pm

Sunday (at Barn) are either Thur 4-6pm, or Sunday 9-11am

Downtown, Portsmouth Village, Riverview and Hwy 15 deliveries 4-6pm

Rideau Heights & Kingscourt deliveries 6-7pm

Pig&Olive West end (Friday, store hours)

Deliveries may occasionally be as late as 8:30pm on a busy Summer night, and if that is too late for you please make a note on your delivery order, or get us to note it in your delivery instructions.

Thanks always for eating with us,

Tim, Tracy and the urban farm team
