TIME CHANGE: 4-5PM pickups from Nov 11th

Posted on November 7th, 2021 by Timothy Lyon

Now the clocks have changed veggie pickup time at the barn has changed to 4-5pm. If you can't make it by 5pm no worries, we will leave your share out for you.

We are glad for several dry clear days over the weekend because it expedites our fieldwork. The major factor which slows us down Oct-Dec isn't the cold, but rather the soil moisture level. Soil becomes sticky in the wet, making boots heavy, digging hard, and incurring extra work removing soil from root crops. So, we're glad of the reprieve from fog, cloud cover and rain to get the sunchokes in and plant the garlic.

For 2021 we're planting the same trio of garlic as last year: Music, Fish Lake and Azores. We do a lot of bed preparation prior to planting garlic, some of which we've already told you about. And, we also try to get the beds in the best possible condition because garlic stays in the ground for a long time, and due to the straw mulch we cover it with, weeding can't easily be done with a hoe, making it more time-consuming if we let weeds emerge.

The Memorial Centre Farmers' Market has now switched to online ordering Tue-Thu with pickup on Sundays. So we're no longer there on the grass all day serving up okonomiyaki and tending veggie and ferment displays. Instead, we join the other vendors and volunteers, along with farmers' market staff, in the E.E. Bennett Barn picking, packing and distributing orders. While usually a fun task, we do miss seeing everyone at market. You can purchase from us and all the other vendors online at memorialcentrefarmersmarket.ca.

Reminder: veggie pickup time at the barn has changed to 4-5pm. Please put it in your calendar, and don't worry if you arrive after 5pm - it'll still be there.
