Turnip trials and Bean bonanzas July 16th 2020

Posted on July 13th, 2020 by Timothy Lyon

UV10 is a new experience for us in Kingston! And what heat. We survive by drinking lots of water and pacing  ourselves to complete tasks. Veggies such as lettuce, however, respond by bolting, leaving them bitter. Thus, we offer some of those as "Braising Greens" this week, to be sauteed like radicchio and eaten as a delicious pre-meal digestion aid. Thanks to those of you who wrote to encourage or comment on the veggies over the past week. It makes such a difference! And to the kind member who dropped of a special snack at the field right at coffee time, thank you!

We're so grateful for the many rainfalls over the past few days. It has improved soil structure to have consistent field-wide irrigation from the heavens!

Turnips are presenting quite a trial again in 2020. After 2019's aphid infestation and crop failures we wanted to quit growing them. But they taste so good! Now, last week, after completing the harvest, we cut into a turnip to find it black inside. We knew the roots we were sending out in the shares had some brown lines on them from cabbage root maggots. And we've always taken the approach recommended in this Eat or Toss article. But to find the interior of the turnip black and ruined was new to us. We're terribly sorry if you received inedible turnips. If you feel a refund is in order, be in touch. On the flip side, beans have started to grow like no tomorrow, so there should be lots of those in your shares over the coming weeks.

Our membership has swelled this season, and we're glad to be supplying so many households with fresh Kingston-grown produce. But, it means our production is stretched, which limits choice in the shares because there's not much to swap out. To increase choice of what you get, please go into your Preferences and adjust them again. We've recently tweaked the items at our end, so adjusting your likes and dislikes should get you more of what you want, and less of what you don't.
