Farm Happenings for the week of September 17, 2019

Posted on September 13th, 2019 by Jessica Foote

Hello all,

Hope that you have all adjusted to the back to school, work, schedule that the fall brings as we prepare for the joys of winter! We have lots of greens seeded for winter harvesting and will be doing another seeding/transplanting this week in the tunnels! One more to go after this week! We are doing a lot of experiments with season extension and pushing the seeding dates can't wait to find out how successful it is! We have also gotten pretty good at growing pea shoots and had a great run this spring of micro greens so winter should be exciting! I love the freedom of the more relaxed pace that comes with the winter shares. I also get more time to visit with the individuals that come to the farm.

We are hoping to offer a few sleigh/wagon ride experiences over the off season as well, as I figured out all the logistics this spring let me know if you are interested. They will be available for any day of the week except Saturday as we have a winter market to attend! I will probably start offering the mid November as the summer season should be well wrapped up by then!

So what else is new in the field? Some celery that is perfect for soup! I also don't mind it for fresh eating as we have watered it well in the last 3 weeks and it is pretty tasty! Just looks a little different, but don't we all. We are offering up some of our apples straight off the tree! Our big Cortland is gorgeous and bountiful this year, not sure how with the dry weather but I guess that well established; 45 years old, came from my dads farm in Stouffville, has its advantages! These apples are not perfect, but the tree has not been sprayed for at least 15 years, and when it was it was just a dormancy spray in the spring. There is the odd bit of scab, the unfit ones will go to the livestock!

Also, new is a taste of winter radishes China Rose we thinned them and just couldn't toss the babies! There are only 30lbs so unless radish is one of your favorites it may not show in your share. We also collected a lot of baby/mini red cabbages from the field this week they are to cute to toss so you may see them! Probably cut the mini greens next week!

The end has come for the cucumbers, and I apologize as I didn't realize how short their life span in the fridge was becoming since the powdery mildew started, until I put one in my own fridge and it didn't last more then two days! We have a few zucchini left but this week will probably see their supply come to an end. So many summer good byes!

See you at drop offs or on farm.

Cheers, Jess
