Farm Happenings for the week of May 2, 2020

Posted on April 27th, 2020 by Jessica Foote

Hello once again!

Time is flying and the field is opening up! We have been transplanting, seeding, and overall hustling to get all the vegetables in the ground and growing. A sure sign of spring is the first signs of asparagus! Wow, the season is upon us and I am hoping it will be ready for our May 16th spring baskets, but I can't promise! Just cross my fingers and pray!

A lot has changed in the business very rapidly, and the truth is I have laughed and cried and flip flopped about ideas so much in the past few weeks it scares me a little! Through all of this uncertainty, the only thing that is certain is that we are going to grow you food and provide our piece of food security for our Community. Now more then ever local food is important, and our fragile food system is obvious. The heroes will be those that stand by local food for the long haul long after this crisis is over. Because the next time there is a crisis there may not be enough farms left to gear up and serve you and your families needs if we don't take care of farmers now and forever!

The set backs have been huge, markets have been closed, managing a new packing system on the fly, my crew from Mexico is unable to fly until they get their work permits in hand! I am one of the many farms that is without their trained and seasoned employees at the moment and for who knows how long! Through all of it we have managed to pull together a crew of friends & family, and CSA members that are rocking it in the field and pack house, and we are managing to stay on track with our planting schedule. Never have I had to be more organized!

Saying all of that, I am still going to put it out there that if you are able bodied and in good health, I am predicting a few bottle necks in the future. Basically with our large hand transplanting of sweet potato slips, melons & squash, and well in two weeks time with weeding. So if you are able to volunteer at all we are open to a little extra help from time to time. If interested email : info@lunargardens.ca with heading VOLUNTEER. And we may call on you to help with some field work.

Furthermore, I am looking for and RV that could house 2 workers for two weeks of their isolation period upon arrival! I am trying to divide the group up as much as possible to reduce risks.

I hope all of your family members are well, and coping in these interesting circumstance. We will get through this, we are all in this together! Community has never been so important.

Virtual Hugs to all!

Cheers your farmer, Jess
