POTATOES

Out 2020 potato crop met the harsh reality that came with the freeze in early May. It was a difficult situation... we lost of of our strawberry crop and had to "unplant" several thousand tomatoes we had in the field. No reasonable amount of row cover would have saved the tomatoes from the cold, so we were glad we put the extra effort into saving the plants. We didn't have an option to protect the potatoes from the cold, and anything growth above ground was burnt to a crisp the next morning.

Potatoes are amazing, and within a couple days the plants were already regrowing. They have continued to thrive since bouncing back after the freeze and we are now ready to start harvesting the early red variety. I dug a few with a shovel over the weekend, and the yield looks to be phenomenal! This week we'll pull the potato harvester out of the barn and start digging and packing them away in the cooler for your summer CSA deliveries.
