Week 14 - Happy Labor Day weekend

Posted on September 3rd, 2021 by Michael Moss

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

We have made it to September, woohoo. We are starting to swim in the harvests of the season. The nights are cooler and the days are slightly shorter, but most importantly, the food is delicious.

This week we have started to harvest the firsts of our cantaloupes. When folks ask me what I most like to grow, the answer is always cantaloupes. There is so much variety in flavor, color, texture and scent. I love nothing more than walking into the house and the smell of the melon has filled the house and beckons me to dive in. Love it. This year we are growing the Arava melon, an Israeli green fleshed beauty. We are also harvesting a few Tuscan cantaloupes this week which are the classic orange fleshed melon. More to come over the next few weeks.

I am also very excited about the Jones Farm Potato medley that we are putting in boxes this week. Jones Farm is an organic farm in the San Louis Valley that specializes in these incredible multi colored new potatoes. There potatoes are seriously delicious and beautiful. Enjoy.

This year has been a tough year for germination on the fields. After much frustration from having crops fail from either too much rain or too much heat, we have grown and harvested a beautiful carrot crop that is ready this week. This is the Bolero carrot that can be stored, but it so sweet your going to want to eat it up!

Now that we are rapidly approaching the equinox we may start to feel the season slipping into fall, but we will have lots of summer crops to fill your fridge.

Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend.

Michael, Cayla, Aiden and all the farmers of Kilt Farm.

p.s. If you find yourself driving by the farm on Labor Day, please honk because we will be laboring for you.

Fruit Share - We have a few more weeks of peaches left before the apples and pears start to flow. This week we have nectarines and peaches available as add ons.
