Week 12: Alliums Galore!

Posted on August 20th, 2021 by Michael Moss

Hello from a remarkably cool and beautiful farm. What a glorious day we have had after the rain came in, cleaned up the air, and cooled down the temp. While it may only last for a few days, we are enjoying it deeply. This week: losing staff, tasty onions, and an update on our melons. Read on!

Today is the last day of three of our employees who are also college students. It's time for them to get back to the business of traditional learning but they will be missed. So before we get a little short-handed, we are trying to get on top of the weeds. If we can get the weeds pushed back a bit now, the shortening daylight and dropping temps will make it easier to win out over these pesky plants for the rest of the season.

We are deep in harvest mode at the farm right now. This week we finished processing all of our Dutch Red Shallots and Manastrell Red Onions to make space for our Calibra Yellow Onions (as modeled by Aiden in the pic this week). We are thrilled to have these delicious alliums to add to your shares. We will be offering the onions, shallots, and garlic in your shares until they are all gone. We have also have a number of new types of peppers ready for you; from the sweet bells to the spicy serranos, jalapeños and full-flavored roasting chilies.

Do you know what I am excited about? Tomatoes, melons, and cantaloupes. Oh my. We tried a few of our Mini Love Watermelons today and they are pretty close to being ready. Our cantaloupes are going to be a few more weeks off. We are just now getting into the red, orange, and paste tomatoes. Expect to see more tomatoes coming available over the next few weeks

Enjoy the bounty in your shares.

Fruit Share - Just so you know, we are still peach season but I can't resist bringing in amazing plums. This week we will have 3# bags of Rosa peaches and 2# bags of Bubble Gum Plums.

The Bubblegum Plum(aka Toka Plum), yes, it tastes like the essence of bubblegum. The Toka Plum is so sweet and candy-like you can't stop eating them. Beautiful bright red fruit with an apricot-colored flesh, the Toka Plum is a delicious treat with a unique taste.

We will have extra Toka Plums, GlowHaven peaches and nectarines for anyone to add to their shares.

Thank you so much for being a part of the farm family. Knowing that we are feeding such amazing folks keeps us going every day of the season.

Michael, Cayla, Aiden, and all of the farmers at Kilt Farm.
