Week 9: Summer Fruits

Posted on July 30th, 2021 by Michael Moss

Hello from a toasty-hot farm. There are big clouds on the horizon and rain in the forecast, but I'm to waiting until I see and feel it before I believe it. Our last rainfall nearly a month ago was almost an inch that fell in 20 minutes. Today, the farm is dusty and dry. Living and farming in Colorado has me ready for almost anything.

This week we were able to take advantage of some unplanned infrastructure work in front of the farm to shift around our priorities. We were able to finish planting out the last of the fall broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and radicchios. Next up will be seeding more carrots, and starting up our fall greens. It feels crazy to be sitting here on a very hot day thinking about our fall production, but that's how farming goes.

But before we head into fall, we have some amazing summer crops finaly beginning to bear fruit at our Gunbarrel location. For this week's CSA, we have started harvesting our shishito peppers and fairytale eggplants. There are also tons of tomatoes and bell peppers moving towards maturity. Today I also saw the first of the many melons and cantaloupes out in the fields. We all just need to hope and pray that the water keeps flowing and that there is a late frost this year.

2021 has not turned out to be the year I planed for at the farm. We have been working hard to adjust to what ever comes our way and keep growing the amazing food we are known for. While the variety in your shares may be a little lacking, we can all look forward to more fun and fresh items as the weeks move forward.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Michael, Cayla, and Aiden

Fruit Share - This week we are bringing in the first of the freestone peaches of the season. These New Haven peaches are delicious. The fruit share will consist of 6 pounds of peaches. I will have extra peaches available as an add-on, 3# peaches for $12.

Hazel Dell Mushrooms grows mushrooms for us. Like every other business around they had to make a covid pivot and reduce the number of varieties they grow each week. They always have the trusty shiitake but I am urging them to bring back some fun and delicious varieties. This week we'll have Royal Trumpet mushrooms.
