CSA Kick Off: Wet Spring Edition

Posted on June 3rd, 2021 by Michael Moss

Let's all take a deep breath together. Here we are. We've made it to the start of the CSA Season!

We thought we'd kick off this year by pulling back the curtain on how Cayla and I are feeling right now. Here's what we are grateful for:

  • Our amazing farm team who have been working in rain, mud, and heat to bring the magic of the farm to life.
  • Our loving friends, families and getting to see some of their faces without masks.
  • Little baby Aiden who's nearly six months old already!
  • Having interesting work. Farming is never ever boring.

And a few things we are struggling with:

  • Farming through the wettest spring in 70 years in such a way that we can fulfill our commitment to feed you and 350 other families this season.
  • Finding people who know how to farm. Training our hard-working, but inexperienced team each year is very intense.
  • Juggling being farmers AND parents. We have so much respect for all parents everywhere who have kept their kids alive for any period of time. It's a lot.

You and our other CSA members are the lifeblood of our farm. We love growing nourishing food for people we get to see each week. It's real. It's food security. It's community. We take our commitment to feed you and your loved ones very seriously.

We've been at this farming thing for over ten years now. This Spring has forced us to dig deep into our farming knowledge, patience, and a fair bit of prayer, to work with the most challenging of conditions. Our workarounds haven't been perfect, but we've coaxed our food to grow anyway.

These first few weeks of the CSA are going to be light. There just isn't very much food ready in the fields yet. But have faith, now that the ground is drying out a little, we are planting our future abundance at a break-neck pace. Thank you for your understanding and being willing to take this wild ride with us.

Oh and another thing we are grateful for: YOU!

Have a great week.

Michael & Cayla

Add-Ons

We have partnered with local farms and high quality local producers to come up with amazing items to add to your share. This year we have:

- Kilt Farm Honey - the hives are right on our property and our good friend Dean Chalpa tends the hives and jars up this honey for us. It's our job to make sure there are plenty of flowers to feed the bees.

- Fair Farm Eggs - These are local certified organic eggs that we make available every week.

- Hazel Dell Mushrooms - a yummy rotating selection of organic mushrooms in ½ pound bags.

- Fresh Dried Pasta - We are partnering with Pastifico to provide ½ pound and 1 pound bags of pasta every week. It's a different shape every week and is always delicious.

- Flowers from Boulder Herb Company - These amazing farm bouquets range the entire Colorado spectrum with Lillies.

- Fresh Milled Flour - This local company sources local and high quality grains from amazing hard white wheat to heirlooms and mills it freshly for us.

When you customize your box, look at the add ons and feel free to, you know, add em on.

Enjoy your first week of the 2020 CSA.
