First snow in the hills means that the farming season shifts to fall.

Posted on September 13th, 2019 by Michael Moss

I woke up on Tuesday morning and the brief glints of sun on the mountains verified the the first snow has fallen. While I am sure it has all melted off by now, it is a sure sign that the season is shifting to fall.

At the farm fall brings us onions, garlic, potatoes winter squash, radicchios, brassicas and so much more. Fall also means that it is time to clean the fields and help our lands prepare for the winter ahead. For us this means pulling out our irrigations systems, plastic mulch and discing in the plant residue. Over the next week we will also be working hard to get our cover crop established on as much of the farm as possible.

The cover crops provides a living root to feed and shelter the soil biology no matter what winter brings. Right now is a magical time as we still have enough sun, warmth and hopefully rain to get the cover crop established. As this crop goes dormant for the winter in November, the root system that gets established holds together the soil and helps the farm bounce back once spring arrives.

Fall is a magical time where can eat well as we appreciate the work done and the blessings of our world.
