ADD A FLAT OF TOMATOES TO YOUR ORDER FROM THE HARVIE EXTRAS

You can add ten pound tomato flats from the Extras on Harvie. We are selling the flats at wholesale prices. They are local, heirloom, certified organic, so they might be more expensive than some out there.

TOMATOES!

Time to indulge in the heirloom tomatoes! They are bodacious and beautiful and bountiful. House in the Woods Farm is well known locally for our heirloom tomatoes. We also grow a nice hybrid red variety for a red slicer. Your boxes contain a mix of them. Here is a column I wrote for the Frederick News Post with a bit of history about heirloom and hybrid tomatoes and the difference: https://www.fredericknewspost.com/your_life/life_news_collection/green/on-the-farm-not-your-grandmother-s-tomatoes/article_996fab72-a701-58c5-adc8-e95cfe96dedb.html

WHAT'S GROWING ON

Happy summer! August is the time for peppers and tomatoes and eggplant. We harvest them all! Summer squash and cucumbers continue, as we pick from our second patch. In August bug pressure is peak too, challenging the greens like kale and chard. We have some kale in the hoophouse we will harvest, but the outdoor kale is done. Enjoy the summer U-Pick zinnias and some beans from the Bean Hut. Pick cherry tomatoes from Candy Lane, they are bountiful and sweet!

EMILY'S STAND

Did you see the sunflower garden near the parking area? Behold the beauty! Emily's Stand is a memorial sunflower patch, grown with love. Read the story of Emily’s Stand here: http://blog.houseinthewoods.com/2019/07/13/emilys-stand/
