The Zucchini Days of Summer

The zucchini are started to flow! We are harvesting daily to keep up. Enjoy them sauteed or grilled or raw! Sometimes zucchini squash get oversized, but they are still delicious shredded and cooked into baked things like zucchini bread or zucchini-crusted pizza.

Enjoy this recipe from The Moosewood Cookbook for zucchini-crusted pizza: http://blog.houseinthewoods.com/2011/06/27/zucchini-crusted-pizza/ (link in plain text below) It is so good, more like a crispy flat quiche, we don’t even put toppings on it. I haven’t made it without cheese, but I might try.

Farm Hands Fun

We enjoyed planting sweet potato plants (called slips) with some of you! Watch the sea of vines fill their space over the next couple months. A few people also helped us harvest garlic. The garlic is drying so it will cure. See what we are up to when you pick up, maybe there is something you can learn or help us with for a few minutes.

What's Growing On

many new crops this week! This year we are testing new techniques and varieties of some crops. A limited test crop, an orange-hued cauliflower! More carrots, since Phil's new planting techniques are working. They should be ready in a couple weeks. A light green zucchini that holds its size better than the dark green. The cucumbers start out slow and then go bonkers for a few weeks. Fresh onions! These are not dried to cure, so use them soon rather than keeping them on your counter for weeks. Enjoy them!

Vacation Season

You can plan your pickup weeks by going onto your Harvie profile and rescheduling pickups on the calendar in advance. Or when you get the Monday share customize email, you can click on "Reschedule your share" and choose a different pickup week. Must do this by Tuesday night. You are welcome to arrange for a friend to pick up your share. Give them the pickup hours and my cell number. You can also simply skip any pickup and we will donate to the Food Bank for you.
