UPDATE YOUR AUTO RENEW STATUS FOR 2023: Renewals will launch in a few weeks. Login to your account and you’ll see AutoRenewal Settings on your Dashboard...set AutoRenew to YES or NO. Or ask me to set it for you. Renewals help us plan the garden for next year.

THE GREAT FREDERICK FAIR

The Great Frederick Fair has begun! It is a week of pride, ag-education and a celebration of hard work and accomplishment for many hard-working children and adults across the county. Contestants set out their best baked goods, knitwear, crafts, and more. Kids put hammocks up in empty stalls and hang out with their farm animals all week between their contests. We like to joke about putting out camp chairs to sit with our garlic and peppers during fair week. You can visit the Farm and Garden Building (Building 14A) to see all the ribbons and beautiful produce grown in our great county.

House in the Woods Farm ribbons from the 2022 fair:

Blue ribbons for garlic, pimento peppers, kiwi berries and largest squash. Kiwi berries also took Best in Show! Third place ribbons for Asian Eggplant and butternut squash. Feeling gratitude for the community love and positivity that the fair offers, a dose of reinforcement that the hard work through hard seasons is worth it. Thank you to HITW workshares who helped me gather up some of our best crops to enter in the fair. (That part of the process can drive me batty :)

KIWI BERRIES

The kiwis are starting to ripen. A fun U-Pick crop, enjoy a few. Check the arbor over the Veggie Shed for squishy kiwi berries. They are ready when soft.

WHERE ARE THE SWEET POTATOES?

We usually start harvesting sweet potatoes by now. We have had some trouble with deer eating sweet potato vines. Phil caught the problem early and covered the vines with row cover, but it did set back the growth of the vines and the size of the sweets that they feed. We are hoping they are just a bit delayed and that we can start harvesting some this week. Also, hopefully, we can have a Sweet Potato Dig in mid-October. Stay tuned.
