Farm Happening for July 1, 2021

Posted on June 27th, 2021 by Ilene Freedman

One of our younger cows, Elva, had a huge calf this week...There will probably be one or two more arrivals in the field this week as Kate and Sweet Potato come due.

LOGISTICS

  • Going on a trip for the holiday weekend? You can HOLD this week's pickup from this email, customize before we harvest (before Wednesday 7am). Otherwise, if you miss your pickup, we will donate your share in our weekly donation to the Frederick Food Bank.
  • Shut frigs, turn off the sink...and thank you for helping each other out if you see these open.

ZUCCHINI

Sometimes zucchini squash get oversized, but they are delicious shredded and cooked into baked things like zucchini bread or zucchini-crusted pizza.

Enjoy this recipe from The Moosewood Cookbook for zucchini-crusted pizza: http://blog.houseinthewoods.com/2011/06/27/zucchini-crusted-pizza/  It is so good, more like a crispy flat quiche, we don’t even put toppings on it. I haven’t made it without cheese, but I am going to try.

CUCUMBERS!

Cucumbers grow their own sun umbrellas! The big leaves of cucumbers shade the cukes so they don’t get scorched by the sun. Clever design. I have to peek under leaves and move them aside to find all the cucumbers. Picking cucumbers is hard work. I have a love and hate relationship with a big cucumber patch. Like zucchini, it’s a lot of routine picking--every couple days--and heavy crates to haul back to the cooler. But what a bounty and a favorite crop to eat. I like them chilled and sliced. Maybe a little salt and lemon over them. Dipped in hummus. Chopped with parsley and tomatoes and sometimes quinoa. Enjoy your cucumbers!

U-PICK UPDATE

U-PICK green beans are ready! Look for the U-PICK sign for the bean row, which is near the flowers. Search for the last of the peas as we await the first cherry tomatoes. Observe the bean trellis as the pole beans cover their trellis. We have a row of zinnias starting to bloom, perfect timing as the first row of U-PICK flowers is past its prime.

EMILY'S STAND

The sunflower garden is getting ready to bloom. Behold the beauty! Read the story of Emily’s Stand here: http://blog.houseinthewoods.com/2019/07/13/emilys-stand/
